Yellow Fever Vaccine – Everything You Need to Know
What Is Yellow Fever?
Yellow Fever is a serious viral illness transmitted by infected mosquitoes, most commonly found in parts of Africa and South America. The disease can cause fever, jaundice, internal bleeding, and in severe cases, death. There is no specific antiviral treatment, but vaccination is highly effective and often mandatory for travel to certain regions.
The Yellow Fever vaccine is a single-dose, long-lasting injection that provides immunity for life in most individuals. At Gloucester Clinic, we’re a registered Yellow Fever vaccination centre, authorised to administer the vaccine and issue an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) — a legal requirement for entry into some countries.
Who Needs the Yellow Fever Vaccine?
You may need the Yellow Fever vaccine if you’re:
Travelling to a country where Yellow Fever is present
Travelling through a Yellow Fever endemic country to reach your final destination
Visiting a country that requires proof of vaccination for entry (even if Yellow Fever isn’t actively circulating there)
Our team at Gloucester Clinic will advise whether you need the vaccine based on your itinerary and health status.
Countries That Require or Recommend Yellow Fever Vaccination
While the Yellow Fever virus is found in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and South America, many countries outside these regions still require proof of vaccination if you're transiting through a high-risk area.
Common destinations where Yellow Fever vaccination is required or recommended include:
Kenya (required for entry if arriving from a Yellow Fever risk country)
Ghana
Nigeria
Uganda
Angola
Brazil
Peru
Colombia
Bolivia
Ecuador
Even if you’re travelling to a country that does not directly require Yellow Fever vaccination, transiting through an at-risk area may mean you still need the certificate. It’s essential to check travel rules before you fly — or speak to our team for expert guidance.

How the Yellow Fever Vaccine Works
The vaccine is a live, attenuated virus, meaning it contains a weakened form of the virus that stimulates your immune system without causing illness. It provides protection within 10 days for most individuals, and usually lasts a lifetime.
After receiving the vaccine, you’ll be given an ICVP certificate, which becomes valid 10 days after your injection and is required for entry into certain countries.
Who Can and Cannot Receive the Vaccine
The vaccine is safe and effective for most people, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Gloucester Clinic will carry out a full clinical assessment to ensure it’s safe for you.
Generally, the Yellow Fever vaccine is not recommended for:
Babies under 6 months of age
People with weakened immune systems
People with severe allergies to eggs
Individuals with a history of thymus gland disorders
We may be able to provide a medical exemption letter where vaccination is not advisable, depending on your travel circumstances.
Side Effects and Safety
Most people tolerate the Yellow Fever vaccine well. Some may experience:
Mild headache
Low-grade fever
Muscle aches
Redness or swelling at the injection site
Serious side effects are rare, but our team will talk you through the risks and benefits before administering the vaccine.
When to Book Your Appointment
You should book your Yellow Fever vaccine appointment at least 10 days before you travel, as this is the minimum time required for the certificate to become valid. However, we recommend booking 4–6 weeks before departure where possible to allow time for other travel vaccines you may need.
